Corey's Blogging Habits

If you take a cursory look through my site, you'll see that the inane drivel that I occasionally spout my blog posts are sporadic at best. But looking through all my old post (including those on that secret blog that no one knows about), I pattern emerges.

First, I'll start out strong with a "I know I haven't posted anything in awhile but I'm back and I'm going to keep up this time.... YAY Blogging!!!!1!¡!1!¡". After that, I'll keep on a good stream of drivel content for awhile, then slowly start trickling off. Finally, I won't post anything for a few months. Then I start the process all over again.

I guess this is just to say that I'm starting the cycle over again. If you actually swing by this site every once in awhile, thanks. If you just haven't deleted me out of your RSS Reader yet, thanks. If you don't know what an RSS Reader is, I'll have an upcoming post about "RSS for normal people" (title still pending), since it's the best way to keep up with sites that don't post consistently.

Comic Link: The Joy of Long Distance Relationships

I relate with this PHD comic all too well.

Dirty Home

I've been spending my free time working on other sites. I just realized that another site on the Internet was actually linking to my site. Now with the thought of others actually viewing the site, I feel like people are walking into my house after I neglected dusting, washing dishes, and making my bed (which I often do in my home in meatspace).

So without putting up one of those cheesy animated "Under Construction" signs, I'll just say excuse the mess.

Late Night Ponderings: Super Bowl Ads

Why is it that all year long we pay extra for stuff (software, services, websites) we use to not see ads, but when the Super Bowl comes around, most people watch the Super Bowl just to see the ads?

Can you avoid Pachelbel's Canon?

Learning the guitar, I've noticed that their's alot of use of certain chords. The guy in this video shows why, in a very entertaining way.

Holy Podcasting Priests, Batman!!

I just wanted to write about one of my favorite podcasts, Catholic Underground. It's produced by four guys who, at one point or another, were in the seminary. One is a priest and another is a deacon. The other two are just as well versed in scripture and theology.

But this isn't listening to some boring talk of Catholic theology for 30 - 45 minutes. This is four guys talking about faith and technology. They talk about useful and serious things, like how having an MP3 player has improved their prayer life, or the aspects of freemasonry that aren't immediately apparent to most people (Episode 18). They're very entertaining.
....

Okay so I'll spill it. I'm posting also because I was mentioned due to some feedback I gave them. They made a comment about me that I'm still trying to decipher.

Core.B is faster than the Apostolic Nuncio appointing a bishop.

I finally figured out it was in reference to something they said earlier in the show regarding appointment of bishops.

Nevertheless, it's still an entertaining show.

Drupal coming close to LiveJournal feature set

With the release of the MultiDomain module, this brings Drupal a tiny step closer to doing what the LiveJournal codebase can do.

In the linked post, the author mentions how he would like to build a UserDomain module. It would allow each user to have their own subdomain.

There's some minimal integration for OpenID in Drupal 4.7, now if only it could get ported to 5.0.

So what else does LiveJournal have that Drupal doesn't have...yet? I'll update the list more as I think about it, but here's what I have so far.

  • Multiple Avatar's per user
  • User Domains (hopefully coming soon)
  • Clean Groups integration (Organic Groups is almost there, but I still find it lacking)

Finally Updating

So for those of you on Facebook, you've noticed an abundance of notes by me popup all of a sudden. That's because I'm unleashing my blog out upon the world. It's just a place to let my write things out, and test other stuff. I won't be offended if you never read it again.

I finally had time to update my site. I wanted to use the newest version of Drupal because of all the new features it has, like the theme with a color chooser on it. Don't you like the Christmas colors?

It's nice being out of school for a little while. I have a little time to think before something is due in two seconds.

I'm going to slowly be cleaning up my site as old modules get ported to work with the new version of drupal. I'll probably try to do some porting myself if I can get the hang of their API.

If you don't understand what that means, don't worry... hardly anyone else did, either. Just know that I'm going to have my head stuck in the computer a little bit longer.

Maybe over the next few days, I'll clean up that post about what's been going on lately in my life.

Geek Baby

Geek BabyToday's Joy of Tech comic was too funny.  I wonder how many people would actually name their kids Default?  Personally, I think Array sounds like a pretty name for a girl, and Null is a good manly name.

SMS Shorthand with Server Response Codes

I don't think I know enough other geeks to be able to do this, but it's pretty funny. My favorite is posted below.

403 = Forbidden
The request was denied for a reason the server does not want to (or has no means to) indicate to the client.

...

[FRIEND] how’d it go last night with that new girl???
[YOU] 403

Kiss It Mainstream Media

Normally I don't get involved in political things, but this is one of the few times that I have to cheer a politician on.

Former President Bill Clinton was on Fox news yesterday, and he finally told a reporter what needed to be said (Google Video Link,Transcript of the Conversation).  Go ahead, watch the video/read the transcript.  My rant will be waiting for you when you come back.

Ignore which political groups evil side he is on, because it doesn't matter in this situation.  I was too young at the time of his presidency to understand what's going on (really, there's alot about politics that I'm a complete idiot about), so I never had an opinion about him, except of what I gathered from people who knew more about politics than I did.

I'm glad that he finally told a reporter the truth about what he thought about them.  With the evolution of the internet, the purpose of the journalist/news reporter is steadily going the way of the candle maker.

Humility

HumilityI'm not going to weigh in on the debates on Domain Specific Languages and if Joel Spolsky is or isn't being a hypocrite (here is a good pointer if you want to read about it, but in my opinion, he isn't). But the someone's extraordinary humility does need to be pointed out. That would be of Matz, the creator of the Ruby programming language, in this post. (I leave the context of the original post in, so I am bolding his words.)

|> I find it amusing that he says Rails is too risky and new, yadda
|> yadda, but then he goes on to talk about their in-house language,
|> "Wasabi":

|I too found that beyond ironic.

Definition of Blogging

While reading Wired's article "The Ultimate Blog Post", I came across the most truthful definition of what blogging is.

"Blog" itself is short for "weblog," which is short for "we blog because we weren't very popular in high school and we're trying to gain respect and admiration without actually having to be around people."

--The Ultimate Blog Post

I figured I need to share it.

End Women's Suffrage

It's sad how naive some people can be, as highlighted in this video. The guy gets an unbelievable amount of girls to sign his petition to end women's suffrage
